When I was in high school, there was only one art teacher. I don’t know, maybe that’s how it normally is, but teachers in other departments would make mention of it like it was a burden for her. My high school was only 1,200 students large so there was actually only one 3-story building of classrooms, an auditorium, a few indoor gyms way over on the other side, and a building just for the art room which included a kiln. It was pretty big and most of the time you would be combined with another art course, so half of the room would be her ceramics class and the other half would be a drawing/painting class. And even though it was totally uncomfortable, she made you sit on these tall stools to work on your art. My neck is tensing up just remembering it.
So obviously there were a lot of stools, and somewhere along the line she got this idea to let her most capable students paint something on the seat of the stool as a personal project. I had always hoped for my chance to paint one of them and leave my mark on the school, and at the very end of my senior year (SEN10RS!) it didn’t look like she was going to offer, but I was her TA that semester so I just said “Hey Mrs. Zolna. Can I just like… paint on one of those blank stools?”
And it was as easy as that. She even gave me a grade for it since I didn’t do much other gradeable work.
Also she seemed to hate when I would draw cartoons instead of “real art”, so this was a very passive-aggressive move on my part.
Anyone wanna take a crack at my alienese?
